Consumers buy twice as much clothing today as they did in 2020, while wearing half as much.
According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the international spearhead of the circular economy, the best product is one that lasts as long as possible, thus avoiding polluting and drawing on the planet's resources to make a new one.
For example, extending the life of a garment by 9 months can reduce its carbon footprint by 20% to 30%, as well as its material footprint (fibers, water, land use, etc.).
This is what the new circular value chains propose, rethinking the way we design, produce, (re)use and dispose of or recycle our materials.
At Maison Montagut, we create clothing that lasts longer and does less damage to the environment.
Passing on this tradition has been part of our DNA for 6 generations, and from design to manufacture and use, our products are designed for aesthetic appeal and durability.
Every season, our Product Design teams draw on the deadstock of yarns in our Braga workshop in Portugal to reinject materials already produced into the new collection being created. This avoids waste and saves virgin resources from being extracted and transformed.
And for the first time in 2024, we will be carrying out a life-cycle analysis of our collections, based on 16 environmental criteria such as CO2 emissions, water consumption, ocean acidification, freshwater eutrophication... This assessment will enable us to calculate the environmental impact of our products.
To preserve the quality and extend the life of our products, we provide care advice and offer a range of accessories carefully selected by expert partners, such as the washing bag, eco-responsible detergent or anti-pilling cashmere comb.
Machine washing is possible under certain knitwear-specific conditions. It's preferable to washing by hand, as the temperature remains constant and the knitwear is neither twisted nor rubbed. Don't hesitate to wash your sweater as often as possible. It will become more beautiful over time, gaining in softness and suppleness.
• Put your sweater in a bag. Wash a maximum of 2 or 3 sweaters together, without mixing colors.
• Machine wash cold, 30°C maximum, on a wool-only program.
• Set spin speed to 300 rpm maximum. Natural fibers like wool or cashmere are sensitive to heat. They tighten during spinning and therefore require a gentle speed to avoid shrinking or felting.
• Use a special wool detergent, one teaspoon is enough, never use fabric softener.
• Remove from the machine as soon as the wash cycle is complete, do not leave to soak.
• Reshape sweaters by hand.
• Dry flat on a towel, away from direct light or heat.
• Iron your slightly damp sweater on a soft iron, inside out or under a damp cloth to avoid shining.
In the same way, we strive to extend the life of our products by offering our customers the opportunity to repair their favorite pieces, whether it's a snag or a pulled stitch.
Altered pieces are mended by hand by our linking machine, using the same or an equivalent thread as that used in their manufacture. A few days later, they're ready for a new life.
This know-how, remaillage, has largely disappeared in France and even in Europe as a result of de-industrialization, but we've always been keen to preserve it to ensure the quality and durability of our pieces.
Beyond physical durability, we are committed to the emotional durability of our products. Each of our knits tells your story, your experience, your feelings and your memories.
Creating collections that have character but will also stand the test of time, and that you'll never tire of, is also our social and environmental responsibility.
That's why every season you can be sure of finding a selection of timeless models in our collections: beautiful basics, essential pieces for a quality wardrobe.
